Kiran Rao’s latest movie, ‘Laapata Ladies‘, brings a refreshing take on women’s journeys and the significance of self-reliance. It’s a delightful blend of satire and comedy, unfolding in the backdrop of rural India, featuring relatable characters facing everyday challenges. The film has a diverse cast, each delivering commendable performances. Let’s delve into the characters and their stories:
Sparsh Srivastav As Deepak:
In “Laapataa Ladies,” Sparsh Srivastav portrays the character of Deepak Kumar, a young man from a small town. He ties the knot with Phool, and the newlyweds embark on a train journey to Deepak’s hometown. However, their joyous trip takes a sudden turn when Phool goes missing, leaving Deepak frantically searching for his lost bride.
Deepak is a devoted husband, always making sure to keep track of Phool’s whereabouts. Even when he accidentally brings Pushpa along, he assures her that he’ll ensure she reaches her destination safely.
Nitanshi Goel As Phool Kumari:
Nitanshi Goel portrays Phool, a character brimming with innocence and naivety, yet deeply devoted to her husband Deepak. When Deepak inadvertently leaves her behind and gets off from the train, mistaking another woman for her, Phool remains asleep on the train. Upon waking up and realizing Deepak’s absence, she gets off at Pateela Railway station. There, she encounters Choto and Abdul, who offer their assistance, eventually leading her to Manju Maai, played by Chhaya Kadam.
At first, Manju hesitates to assist Phool, but eventually, she changes her mind and offers her guidance. Throughout their interactions, Manju imparts valuable life lessons to Phool, emphasizing the significance of independence and self-reliance. As their bond strengthens, Phool decides to embark on a significant journey to Deepak’s village, Surajmukhi, all by herself, demonstrating a remarkable growth in her confidence and capabilities.

Pratibha Ranta As Pushpa Rai / Jaya:
In the movie, Pratibha Ranta takes on the character of Pushpa Rani, but her real identity is revealed to be ‘Jaya’ midway through. Jaya conceals her true name because she’s avoiding her husband, Pradeep. Throughout the film, she fabricates not only her name but also the information she shares with the police officer, Shyam Manohar.
Jaya plays a crucial role in the film, although her main storyline unfolds halfway through. We learn that she was pushed into marriage with Pradeep against her will by her parents, despite her passion for studying Agriculture Science. She contemplates escaping from Deepak’s household to chase her dreams but hesitates upon witnessing Deepak’s relentless search for Phool. Instead, she devises a plan to retrieve Phool herself, which proves successful in the end.
Bhaskar Jha As Pradeep:
Jaya marries Pradeep, her husband has a questionable history; rumors suggest he may have been involved in the death of his first wife. Despite this, Jaya’s affluent parents arrange the marriage due to Pradeep’s wealthy background. His underhanded tactics, including bribing a police officer, further highlight his dubious character. However, justice prevails in the end, as Pradeep faces the consequences of his actions.
Ravi Kishan As Inspector Shyam Manohar:
Ravi Kishan portrays Inspector Shyam Manohar, a corrupt cop with a knack for uncovering the truth, alongside a rather conspicuous tobacco-chewing habit. His character first comes into play when Deepak and his pals approach him to report Phool’s disappearance. Instead of taking it seriously, he humorously quips about losing a newlywed wife, failing miserably in his attempts. Throughout the film, Inspector Shyam Manohar delivers some of the most comedic lines, guaranteeing plenty of laughs whenever he graces the screen.
Despite his shady and selfish tendencies, he shows a glimpse of goodness when faced with a crucial decision between aiding Jaya, who is in trouble because of her husband Pradeep, or succumbing to bribery. Opting for the former, he not only assists Jaya but also ensures that Pradeep won’t bother her again. This moment highlights a surprising depth to his character, revealing a compassionate side beneath his otherwise dubious behavior.
Chhaya Kadam As Manju Maai:
Chhaya Kadam portrays Manju Maai, who runs a small tea stall at Pateela railway station, offering samosas and snacks to travelers. Living contentedly with her cat, she opens up to Phool about her past. Previously married with a son, her life took a dark turn with her alcoholic and abusive husband. Determined to carve her own path, she resolved to be self-reliant and independent from then on.
Manju Maai emerges as a significant figure for Phool, imparting tough yet crucial lessons in self-reliance.
